how to

There are many different ways to moisturise, the most traditional one being with a lotion or cream. Sunscreens often contain moisturising properties, so occasionally on the weekend I will only use a sunscreen. I moisturise twice a day: once in the morning with a tinted moisturiser to even out my skin tone and to provide sunscreen, then once before bed when I apply a facial oil. I use both all over my face and neck, and all the way down to my upper chest area.

smart choice

Many moisturisers contain vitamins but usually the quantity found in a moisturiser is not enough to make a difference, plus many vitamins become inactive with light and exposure to oxygen. Some vitamins that have been demonstrated to have potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties are vitamins E (alpha-tocopherol), C (L-ascorbic acid), A (retinol) and B3 (niacinamide). I think the most effective of these is B3 (niacinamide), which has been shown to improve skin elasticity and the appearance of wrinkles and yellowing. If buying E or C, try to buy them as a mix as there’s evidence to suggest they’re more effective when combined than individually.
